Well, sort of. Also it was super ugly. Meet the 2002 Cosmo 21 concept. The car was built off of an NB Miata by Mazda subsidiary M’z, and powered by a Renesis 13B. It was supposed to pay homage to the classic Cosmo 110. Did I mention it was super ugly?

I wouldn’t call it ugly, but I would call it bloated.

There’s excess bodywork on the concept. If the design were cleaned up, it’d be damn sexy. It looks good, just...bloated.

I fucking love that look. Yeah, it’s a bit heavier than the original Cosmo but that’s understandable. Wheel spats always get a tick in my books.

This car is such a hodgepodge of designs. This looks as though someone at Mazda had a dream garage and decided instead of buying a bunch of shitty cars, they would just make one big fuck up. This guy’s dream garage must consist of a Corvair, Avanti, 1999 Elise, Z3, 05 Thunderbird, 240Z, and a Miata. Smash those design ques together and fill it with a TVR interior with some Porsche seats and wrap that all around one of the greatest and most unreliable motors ever. Thanks Mazda!! I’ve always wanted someones drug crazed car design.

This could’ve been so much better. I think it’s a bit of its time . I think the shape is right, they just tacked on too many vents and things, the wheels are shit and the 90s-spec lights look silly.

As part of one of my many hobbies... I’ma rip right the hell into this. First off, the vents behind the front wheel wells need to go. Yes, I know they were on the original car. But this car has been smoothed out and modernized. Replace the vents with a single inlet that’s made out of mesh. Fixed that problem. Second, the vents on the lower half behind both wheels. No. Fuck you, designer. They serve no purpose and interrupt the inwards curve of the bottom of the car. Rims need to be melted down into a rod that is to be used to beat the man who designed them into a bloody pulp. Next is the lip on both the front and the back. Just get rid of it. Again, the bottom of the car is supposed to curve inwards and that lip going all the way around ruins it. Next up is the grille. I could deal with it if it wasn’t so big. Make it shorter. You can keep it pointed at the bottom as part of your modern design language, but there is no need for it to be so big. Next is the taillights. If the taillights were just a single pane instead of being inset and jeweled, they’d look a lot better. Also, the character line running through the middle of the car. Make it a bit thinner and we’re in business. Finally, just ditch the houndstooth interior. Either that or make the pattern smaller. It clutters up the interior too much and makes the seats look bigger than they really are.

By the way, if someone photoshops this all together (because I suck at Photoshopping stuff) then that would by awesome.

Bit about the wheels made me chuckle. I don’t know why the driving lights needed goggles, but they don’t and they need to also be flush with the bumper instead of inset.

I think the original car had hounsdtooth seats though.

The houndstooth was an option, yes. But the pattern inlays themselves were never the size of small planets. The plaid option on the other hand... Eghhh...
